H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF EDWARD S. LORENZEN

AND MICHAEL S. LORENZEN

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the untimely passing

2

of Edward Lorenzen and his young son, Michael, in a tragic house fire at their home in Coventry.

3

They are survived by Zacheri and Penny Lorenzen, Mr. Lorenzen’s other two children and

4

Michael's brother and sister, and Kellie Lorenzen, Michael's mother; and

5

     WHEREAS, In addition, Michael was the grandson of Barbara Houghtaling and the late

6

Michael Lorenzen, Mr. Lorenzen's mother and father, and Richard and Cathy Souza, Michael's

7

maternal grandparents; and

8

     WHEREAS, Ed Lorenzen was a twenty-year veteran of the federal budget process and an

9

influential budget and policy staffer in Washington, D.C. Until June of 2010, he had served on

10

the staff of House Leader Steny Hoyer, as Senior Policy Advisor, and previously on the staff of

11

former Congressman Charlie Stenholm. Most recently, for the past seven and a half years, he was

12

a senior advisor for the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget; and

13

     WHEREAS, In addition, Mr. Lorenzen had helped to craft the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go-

14

Act where he earned the nickname "Captain PAYGO", and had served as staff on the Simpson-

15

Bowles Commission; and

16

     WHEREAS, Ed Lorenzen had a brilliant mind, legendary wit, and most importantly, an

17

unending love and devotion for his children. Upon their passing, his four-year-old son Michael

18

was found in his arms, "a final act of bravery from a father to a son"; now, therefore be it

19

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby extends deepest condolences on the passing of Ed and Michael

2

Lorenzen; and be it further

3

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

4

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Kellie, Zacheri and Penny Lorenzen.
