AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENDING THE REPORTING AND

EXPIRATION DATES OF THE SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND

MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH

DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING DISABILITIES

     RESOLVED, That the special legislative commission created by resolution No. 220

2

passed by the House of Representatives at its January session, A.D. 2014, and approved April 29,

3

2014, entitled, "HOUSE RESOLUTION CREATING A SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE

4

COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EDUCATIONAL

5

NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING DISABILITIES," and as

6

amended by resolution No. 277 passed by the House of Representatives at its January session,

7

A.D. 2015, and approved May 12, 2015, entitled "HOUSE RESOLUTION REINSTATING AND

8

EXTENDING THE COMMISSION LIFE AND AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE

9

SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS

10

ON THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING

11

DISABILITIES" and as extended by resolution No. 199 passed by the House at its January

12

session, A.D. 2016, and approved May 3, 2016, entitled "HOUSE RESOLUTION EXTENDING

13

THE EXPIRATION AND REPORTING DATES OF THE SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE

14

COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EDUCATIONAL

15

NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING DISABILITIES," and as

16

extended by resolution No. 376 passed by the House at its January session, A.D. 2017, and

17

approved September 19, 2017, entitled ""HOUSE RESOLUTION REINSTATING AND

18

EXTENDING THE EXPIRATION AND REPORTING DATES OF THE SPECIAL

LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE

2

EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING

3

DISABILITIES" is hereby authorized to continue its study and make a report to the House of

4

Representatives on or before February 7, 2019, and said commission shall expire on May 7, 2019;

5

and be it further

6

     RESOLVED, That the time for reporting authorized by resolution No. 376 passed by the

7

House of Representatives at its January session, A.D. 2017, and approved September 19, 2017, be

8

and the same is hereby rescinded; and be it further

9

     RESOLVED, That the composition of said legislative commission is hereby amended by

10

increasing the membership from nine (9) members to thirteen (13) by adding: one of whom shall

11

be the President of the University of Rhode Island, or designee; one of whom shall be the

12

President of Rhode Island College, or designee; and two (2) of whom shall be members of the

13

general public, to be appointed by the Speaker of the House.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

OF

H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

AMENDING THE MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENDING THE REPORTING AND

EXPIRATION DATES OF THE SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO ASSESS AND

MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE EDUCATIONAL NEEDS OF CHILDREN WITH

DYSLEXIA AND/OR READING DISABILITIES

     This resolution would amend and increase the membership from nine (9) to thirteen (13)

2

and extend the reporting and expiration dates of the special legislative commission to assess and

3

make recommendations on the educational needs of children with dyslexia and/or reading

4

disabilities, from June 14, 2018, to February 7, 2019, and said commission would expire on May

5

7, 2019.
