EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF E. JAMES MCENANEY,

JR.

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this House has learned of the passing of E.

2

James McEnaney, Jr., beloved husband for sixty-seven years to his high school sweetheart, Olga

3

McEnaney, and the cherished father of Cheryl McEnaney and her partner, Peter Chemel, Randall

4

McEnaney, E.J. McEnaney, III, Esq., and his wife, Rhonda, and daughter-in-law Nancy Cerussi.

5

He was also the very proud grandfather of Randall, Elizabeth, and Edward James, IV; and

6

     WHEREAS, Born in New London, Connecticut, Mr. McEnaney was the son of the late

7

Edward James and Gladys McEnaney and the brother of Patricia Glynn and her husband, Edward,

8

the late Thomas McEnaney, and brother- and sister-in-law, Dr. Arthur and Lorraine Mansillo; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. McEnaney was a graduate of the Bulkeley School and served our

10

country with honor in the United States Navy. Upon returning from service, he studied broadcast

11

journalism at the University of Connecticut where he launched his radio career at New London's

12

WNLC; and

13

     WHEREAS, In 1952, Jim and his wife, Olga, moved to her home state of Rhode Island,

14

where he spent the next two decades in radio, first as the morning man with Salty Brine on

15

WEAN and subsequently in management at WHIM, WICE, WJAR and WLKW. He also hosted

16

the daily "Streets of the City," and his distinctive voice was highly sought after for ad campaigns;

17

and

18

     WHEREAS, During the 1960s, Jim and his wife purchased a fine clothing shop "Ida

19

Leach" which they ran for the almost thirty years. Jim also served at the Rhode Island

Department of Transportation and RIPTA, retiring when he was in his eighties; and

2

     WHEREAS, Over the course of his illustrious life, Mr. McEnaney was honored with

3

numerous awards including being nominated for induction into the Rhode Island Radio Hall Of

4

Fame; and

5

     WHEREAS, In addition to his love for his wife and his family, Mr. McEnaney was a

6

passionate music lover and an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, the Providence College Friars, the

7

Boston Celtics, and the New England Patriots. He also enjoyed golf and tennis, and was a

8

member and served on the Board of Directors at the Metacomet Country Club, and was a member

9

of the Alpine Country Club. For more than two decades, he and his family had summered at

10

Wesquage in Narragansett, where they forged many enduring, treasured friendships; and

11

     WHEREAS, There is no doubt that Jim McEnaney left this world a far better place

12

because of his life’s endeavors. He was a kind, compassionate, and good-natured gentleman,

13

whose ready wit and smiling face enriched the lives of all who knew him and will long be

14

remembered; now, therefore be it

15

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

16

Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest sympathies on the passing of E. James

17

McEnaney, Jr.; and be it further

18

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

19

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Olga McEnaney and Family.
