EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE RAYMOND E.

GRIMES

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Raymond E. Grimes was born on December 31, 1925, in the

2

City of Providence. He was a son of the late Peter J. Grimes and Helen Grimes. He graduated

3

from Central High School and the Russo School of Finance; and

4

     WHEREAS, Mr. Grimes served our nation with honor and valor during World War II as

5

a member of the United States Marine Corps. He served with the 1st Marine Division and

6

participated in the invasions of Peleliu and Okinawa, Japan. During the invasion of Peleliu, he

7

served as a runner for legendary United States Marine Corps officer, Lewis Burwell "Chesty"

8

Puller; and

9

     WHEREAS, Mr. Grimes had a long and distinguished career as both a stockbroker and as

10

a dedicated public servant. He was elected to the Rhode Island State Senate in 1969 and served

11

his Providence constituents to 1975 with integrity and devotion. Legislation he introduced created

12

the Rhode Island State Lottery. He later became the Deputy Director of the Rhode Island Lottery

13

and served in that position for thirty-two years; and

14

     WHEREAS, Raymond Grimes leaves behind three nephews, Brian, John, and Bruce

15

Glancy, a niece, Robin Glancy, two great nieces, Cristina and Samantha, and a great nephew,

16

Matthew Glancy. He was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Grimes and Helen Glancy, and his

17

niece, Rosemary Glancy; now, therefore be it

18

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

19

Providence Plantations hereby expresses condolences on the passing of the Honorable Raymond

E. Grimes; and be it further

2

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

3

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Brian Glancy, John Glancy, Bruce Glancy and

4

Robin Glancy.
