     STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2015

____________

H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE NORTH SMITHFIELD BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL TEAM ON

WINNING THE 2014-2015 RHODE ISLAND DIVISION II BOYS' VOLLEYBALL

CHAMPIONSHIP

Introduced By: Representatives Newberry, Morin, Phillips, Casey, and Winfield

     Date Introduced: June 10, 2015

Referred To: House read and passed

1

WHEREAS, The North Smithfield Boys' Volleyball team entered the Rhode Island

2

Division II Volleyball Tournament as a 1-seed after winning the North Division with a perfect

3

14-0 divisional record; and

4

WHEREAS, In the State Tournament Quarterfinals and Semi-finals, North Smithfield

5

swept East Greenwich and West Warwick to roll into the state finals and play for the State Title;

6

and

7

WHEREAS, In the finals, North Smithfield faced fellow 1-seed and the South Division

8

Champions, Cranston East. In the first set of the best of three finals, North Smithfield started off

9

slowly and as a result, they were facing a daunting 12-6 deficit. Champions often have to

10

overcome some adversity before they can claim a title, and North Smithfield dug deep and

11

responded with an array of big blocks, power hitting and superb defense to roar back and win the

12

first set by the score of 25 to 22. The second set was also closely fought, with the Northmen

13

ultimately prevailing 25 to 20. With the championship easily within their grasp, North Smithfield

14

played perhaps their best volleyball of the season, controlling the play and thoroughly outclassing

15

their opponents to win the third set 25 to 16 and claim the Boys' Division II Volleyball title for

16

the first time in school history; and

17

WHEREAS, Winning a championship requires that every member of a team gives

18

everything they have and willingly puts their individual goals secondary to the needs of the team.

19

The North Smithfield Boys' Volleyball Team had these qualities in abundance as they were led all

1

season by the spirited play provided by Leonhard A. Albrecht, Ryan C. Wethey, Nathan F.

2

Palmer, Co-Captain Brian M. Lamoureux, Joshua B. Kruzan, Derek Kruzan, Co-Captain Zachary

3

Mowry, Co-Captain Evan P. Mercier, Matthew Bonas, Kevin Taratuta, John R. O'Donnell, Mark

4

E. Keenan, Jacob J. Haner, Anders Viera Dones, Drew P. O'Donnell, Adam R. Carey, and Keanu

5

S. Thepngone. North Smithfield also benefitted all season from the innovative coaching and

6

superb leadership provided by Head Coach Jeffrey Crins; now, therefore be it

7

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

8

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the North Smithfield Boys' Volleyball Team on

9

winning the 2014-2015 Rhode Island Division II Boys' Volleyball Championship; and be it

10

further

11

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

12

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Jeffrey Crins, Boys' Volleyball Head

13

Coach, North Smithfield High School.
