H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING ALAN TENREIRO ON BEING SELECTED AS RHODE ISLAND'S

2015 "RHODE ISLAND HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR"

     WHEREAS, Annually, the Rhode Island Association of School Principals (RIASP)

selects an individual whose leadership, efforts, and dedication has provided successful and quality

learning opportunities for students. The 2015 recipient of the Rhode Island High School

Principal of the Year recognition is Alan Tenreiro, Principal of Cumberland High School; and

     WHEREAS, An enthusiastic educator, Principal Tenreiro has distinguished himself as a

consummate administrator throughout his career in education. His leadership as Principal of

Cumberland High School has clearly been exemplary, and he has not only earned the admiration

of his colleagues, but also the gratitude and respect of all of the young people he has guided

during his tenure in education; and

     WHEREAS, A graduate of Rhode Island College, where he earned his Bachelor's degree

in social studies education and his Master's degree in school administration, Mr. Tenreiro began

his teaching career at Mount St. Charles Academy as a social studies teacher in 1999. Prior to

becoming Principal at Cumberland High School in 2012, he had been the assistant principal of

Smithfield High School; and

     WHEREAS, Principal Tenreiro is a creative and innovative school leader. He is credited

with initiating a focus on writing that resulted in a significant increase in the school's NECAP

writing scores. In addition, during his tenure, the school's graduation rate has risen significantly,

from 80 percent in 2012, to 87.5 percent in 2014; and

     WHEREAS, "The future," in the wise words of Eleanor Roosevelt, "belongs to those who

believe in the beauty of their dreams." Since taking the helm of Cumberland High School in

2012, Principal Tenreiro has inspired his staff and the school’s students to envision their

possibilities and to believe that they can build a future full of promise, and he is eminently worthy

of our recognition and gratitude; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Alan Tenreiro on the prestigious honor of being

named the "Rhode Island High School Principal of the Year" for 2015. We wish him the very best

of health, happiness, and success in all his future endeavors; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Alan Tenreiro.
