PROCLAIMING MAY 21ST OF 2015, TO BE "CHILD CARE AWARENESS DAY" IN THE

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND DEDICATING THIS DAY IN THE MEMORY OF

KATHIE SANDBERG

     WHEREAS, On May 21st of 2015, a panoply of citizens representing myriad

2

organizations and institutions from across our state will gather to celebrate the fourth annual

3

Child Care Awareness Day which this year is being dedicated in the memory of child care

4

advocate Kathie Sandberg; and

5

     WHEREAS, This event is being held to highlight the work of various organizations and

6

programs in the state that work every day to improve the lives of children, youth, and families by

7

providing high quality care and education; and  

8

     WHEREAS, Research on the human brain reveals that an overwhelming amount of a

9

person's lifetime brain development occurs during early childhood, before the age of three; and

10

     WHEREAS, To be prepared for success, our children must receive high quality child care

11

from caregivers who have the appropriate skills, education, and training; and   

12

     WHEREAS, A child care teacher's day is spent interacting with children and caring for

13

their needs, because it is through play, interaction, and socializing that children learn the

14

fundamentals about others, as well as the world around them; and

15

     WHEREAS, High quality child care is sensitive, responsive, personal, and

16

developmentally appropriate. It provides the proper nurturing that children need at one of the

17

most critical and vulnerable times in their lives; and

18

     WHEREAS, It is of immense importance that Rhode Island's children receive the highest

19

quality care and are challenged at an early age, so that they may develop the necessary abilities to

thrive in adulthood and someday lead our state into an even brighter future; now, therefore be it

2

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

3

Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the 21st of May, 2015, to be the fourth annual "Child

4

Care Awareness Day" and dedicating this day in the memory of Kathie Sandberg. We urge all the

5

citizens of the state to join with us in recognizing the tremendous skills, dedication, diligence, and

6

value of the laudable child care providers who protect and nourish our children and equip them

7

for future success; and be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the President of the Child Care Directors

10

Association, the Director of Prevent Child Abuse RI, and the Chair of the Permanent Legislative

11

Commission on Child Care.
