H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

WELCOMING THE HONORABLE ORLANDO JOSÉ COGOLLO TORRES, MAYOR OF

THE MUNICIPALITY OF ARJONA, COLOMBIA, AND HIS EMINENT DELEGATION TO

THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, A community that welcomes all who live and make their homes there is the

epitome of America's deepest values of freedom and equality, and opens the door to this nation's

greatest aspirations and prospects for prosperity and economic growth; and

     WHEREAS, In business and commerce, education and government, descendants and

immigrants of Colombia have prospered and added greatly to the vibrancy of our state, our

economy, and our neighborhoods. Today, Rhode Island has more than 8,000 residents of

Colombian descent; and

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Orlando José Cogollo Torres, Mayor of the Municipality of

Arjona, Colombia, and his delegation have come to Rhode Island to build and strengthen ties with

the City of Pawtucket as well as our state, through understanding, cooperation, and friendship;

and

     WHEREAS, Arjona is a municipality located in northern Colombia and has a population

of roughly the same size as Pawtucket. With goals not unlike the leaders of cities and towns

across Rhode Island, Mayor Torres endeavors to work for the betterment of his community and

his country; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

Providence Plantations hereby warmly welcomes the Honorable Orlando José Cogollo Torres,

Mayor of the Municipality of Arjona, Colombia, and his delegation to the Rhode Island State

House. We are honored to have them join us; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That this House hereby applauds the spirit of unity between the leaders of

the Municipality of Arjona and the City of Pawtucket and their goal of building stronger

communities through Sister City alliances and partnerships of cooperation and friendship; and be

it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Orlando José Cogollo Torres,

Mayor of the Municipality of Arjona, Colombia.
