RECOGNIZING CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH AND COMMENDING

THE EAST PROVIDENCE HIGH SCHOOL DECA CHAPTER FOR ITS EFFORTS TO

PROMOTE AND ADVANCE CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN RHODE

ISLAND

     WHEREAS, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in

2

marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe;

3

and

4

     WHEREAS, DECA is organized into two unique student divisions, each with programs

5

designed to address the learning styles, interest and focus of its members. The High School

6

Division includes 200,000 members in 3,500 schools worldwide; and

7

     WHEREAS, With a nearly 70-year history, DECA has impacted the lives of more than

8

ten million students, educators, school administrators and business professionals since its

9

founding in 1946. DECA's strong connection with local organizations has resonated into a brand

10

that people identify as a remarkable experience in the preparation of emerging leaders and

11

entrepreneurs; and

12

     WHEREAS, The East Providence High School Chapter of DECA, under the leadership

13

of Chapter President Sam Lawrence, engaged in DECA community service, advocacy and

14

outreach campaigns during the 2015 Career and Technical Education Month, completing three

15

school outreach activities, three public policymaker outreach activities, and three community

16

outreach activities; and

17

     WHEREAS, Included in the school's community outreach activities was Operation

18

Comfort Pack, which is a charity dedicated to providing children entering the foster care system

with backpacks filled with necessities that will make their transition into a new home much

2

easier; and

3

     WHEREAS, For their efforts in conjunction with this charity, the members of the East

4

Providence High School DECA Chapter were awarded 1st place in the Community Service

5

Project competition for Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

6

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

7

Providence Plantations hereby recognizes Career and Technical Education Month and commends

8

the East Providence High School DECA Chapter for it’s continued efforts to raise awareness of

9

career and technical education in our state; and be it further

10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Sam Lawrence, President, East Providence

12

High School Chapter of DECA.
