H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

EXPRESSING DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF WILLIAM MERRITT

FIELD

     WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that this House has learned of the passing of William

2

Merritt Field, beloved husband of Audrey Brito Field, devoted father of Michael Field and his

3

wife, Rebecca, and SFC. Kevin Field and his wife, Katie, and the proud grandfather of Autumn

4

and Jacob Field; and

5

     WHEREAS, Mr. Field was born in Kassel, Germany, a son of the late Col. Frederick P.

6

Field Sr. and Ruth Harriot Field. He was the brother of Frederick Field, Jr., and his wife, Cheryl

7

Jean, and the late Rosalind Field Peters-Doyle. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Joseph

8

M. Brito, Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth, Mary Brito Fitzgerald, Michael Brito, Sr., and his wife,

9

Sally, and the late C. Patrick Brito and his wife, Mary, as well as several nieces, nephews, great-

10

nieces and great-nephews; and

11

     WHEREAS, A graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and Providence College, Mr.

12

Field had been employed with C. Brito Construction, Inc. While working in construction, he

13

obtained his commercial pilot license and subsequently flew freight for several airlines, finishing

14

the last 15 years of his career as a pilot for Cape Air; and

15

     WHEREAS, Mr. Field served our country with honor as a Green Beret in United States

16

Army during the Vietnam War. Before his retirement from the Army, he achieved the rank of

17

Major. He also served in the Army National Guard and the Army Reserve, and maintained a long

18

relationship with the Special Forces community, serving on the board of the Rhode Island chapter

19

of the Special Forces Association; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to his family and career, Mr. Field enjoyed motorcycle riding

2

and over the years, had participated in numerous charitable endeavors. He was a good man, who

3

served his country and loved and cared for his family, and he will be sadly missed by all who had

4

the good fortune to be a part of his life; now, therefore be it

5

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

6

Providence Plantations hereby posthumously expresses our gratitude for his service to this nation

7

and extends our deepest sympathies on the passing of William Merritt Fields; and be it further

8

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

9

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mrs. Audrey Brito Field and Family.
