RELATING TO EDUCATION - CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION

     

     Introduced By: Representatives McNamara, Casey, Azzinaro, Lancia, and Price

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-45.1 of the General Laws entitled "Career and Technical

2

Education [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby

3

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-45.1-4. Career and Technical education internships for younger students. – (a)

5

Any student less than eighteen (18) years of age may participate in a career and technical

6

education internship or teacher supervised job site training program provided the following

7

factors are met:

8

      (1) The student attends and is interning at or through a career and technical education

9

center;

10

      (2) The proposed internship is part of the career and technical education center's

11

program, either at or through said program; and

12

      (3) The appropriate educational advisors, counselors or instructor determine that the

13

student is suitable to participate in the internship for which he/she has applied and that the student

14

has the necessary educational background, experience and personal maturity to engage in such

15

internship.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

EXPLANATION

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would permit children under eighteen (18) years of age who are attending career

2

and technical education schools, to participate in career and technical internships or teacher

3

supervised job site training program at or through said education center provided that they are

4

deemed to have the necessary educational background, experience and maturity.

5

     This act would take effect upon passage.
