RELATING TO EDUCATION - CURRICULUM

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-22 of the General Laws entitled "Curriculum [See Title 16

Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby amended by adding thereto

the following section:

     16-22-27. Availability of instruction in musical performance education. – (a) All

5

secondary public schools including middle schools, or any other secondary schools managed and

6

controlled by the state shall offer as part of the curriculum, courses in musical performing arts,

7

including, but not limited to, band, chorus, orchestra, and other performance ensembles, with

8

emphasis upon development of aesthetic appreciation and the skills of creative expression.

9

     (b) All secondary school principals shall meet with the music department to analyze

10

student scheduling to maximize music performing ensembles within the school curriculum.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect on July 1, 2015.

     This act would mandate that public secondary schools, managed or controlled by the

state, provide courses in musical performing arts as part of their curriculum effective July 1,

3

2015.

     This act would take effect on July 1, 2015.
