A N   A C T

RELATING TO EDUCATION - COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF RHODE ISLAND

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Amore, Maldonado, Abney, Blazejewski, and Fogarty

     It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 16-33.1 of the General Laws entitled "Community College of

2

Rhode Island [See Title 16 Chapter 97 - The Rhode Island Board of Education Act]" is hereby

3

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     16-33.1-7. Community College of Rhode Island excellence grant. – (a) There shall be

5

a grant award provided by the Community College of Rhode Island which shall be administered

6

annually to any Rhode Island resident applicant who satisfies the following criteria:

7

     (1) The applicant shall be twenty (20) years of age or less;

8

     (2) The applicant shall be a full-time student at the Community College of Rhode Island

9

or applicant therefor;

10

     (3) The applicant must have graduated in the top fifteen percent (15%) of his/her high

11

school class;

12

     (4) The applicant must have a ninety-five percent (95%) attendance record or better,

13

excluding documented absences for medical reasons, over the preceding four (4) year period; and

14

     (5) The applicant must have achieved an "SAT" or "ACT" score at or above the state

15

average for the preceding year in which the applicant has applied for the grant.

16

     (b) Any grant award provided pursuant to this section shall be appropriated from the

17

general fund.

     (c) Grant awards pursuant to this section shall be offered to any qualifying applicant for a

19

period of two (2) years, and may be revoked or suspended upon the occurrence of any event

which would subject the student to dismissal or suspension from the school or would otherwise

2

disqualify the student from receiving federal student aid.

3

     (d) Grant awards provided pursuant to this section may be applied in addition to any

4

other qualifying grant or award which the applicant shall receive.

5

     (e) The board of education may adopt rules and regulations necessary to implement the

6

provisions of this section.

7

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
