H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NASONVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT

     WHEREAS, The Nasonville Fire Department was created in 1940 when various

2

community leaders recognized the growing need for fire protection services. As a result, an

3

organizational meeting was held in St. Therese's Church on January 23, 1940, and C. Harry

4

Murphy was appointed temporary President and Wilfred J. Bilodeau was appointed temporary

5

Secretary; and

6

      WHEREAS, On February 18, 1940, an association was formed when thirty men from the

7

villages of Mohegan, Nasonville, Mt. Pleasant, and Tarklin volunteered to be firemen and created

8

a Fire Department with officers to be elected in 1940 and reelected in 1941; and

9

     WHEREAS, The post office at that time was located in Nasonville and therefore it was

10

decided by vote to name the new fire department the "Nasonville Volunteer Fire Department."

11

Within a year of its creation, the new fire department acquired a new fire engine and built a fire

12

station on land that was donated by the Stillwater Worsted Company. Funding for the department

13

in the first few years was dependent upon the holding of various fundraisers until February of

14

1943, when the Nasonville Fire District was chartered and the collection of taxes began; and

15

     WHEREAS, The first Nasonville Fire Department Fire Station was located on Douglas

16

Pike and was used for twenty-four years. However, when new and heavier equipment was

17

purchased, a new bay station was built on Victory Highway in 1965, and a two bay addition has

18

since been added; and

19

     WHEREAS, The Nasonville Fire Department currently maintains a roster of

20

approximately thirty-five members. It has two engines, one advanced life support ambulance, one

brush tanker, and one attack truck/command vehicle. The dedicated members of the Nasonville

2

Fire Department work tirelessly and selflessly every day to protect the lives and property of the

3

people living in the community; now, therefore be it

4

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

5

Providence Plantations hereby joyously celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the Nasonville Fire

6

Department; and be it further

7

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

8

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Chief Augustine Eddy.
