H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

CREATING A SPECIAL LEGISLATIVE COMMISSION TO STUDY AND ASSESS THE

NEED FOR TECHNOLOGY FUNDING TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR 21ST CENTURY

CAREERS

     RESOLVED, That a special legislative commission be and the same is hereby created

2

consisting of nine (9) members: four (4) of whom shall be members of the Rhode Island House of

3

Representatives, not more than three (3) from the same political party, to be appointed by the

4

Speaker of the House; one of whom shall be the Executive Director of the Rhode Island

5

Association of School Committees, or designee; one of whom shall be the Executive Director of

6

the Rhode Island School Superintendents' Association, or designee; one of whom shall be a RIDE

7

staff member, to be appointed by the Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary

8

Education; one of whom shall be the Chief Information Officer of the Rhode Island Division of

9

Information Technology; and one of whom shall be an information technology services staff

10

person employed by a Rhode Island public university or college, to be appointed by the Speaker

11

of the House.

     In lieu of any appointment of a member of the legislature to a permanent advisory

13

commission, a legislative study commission, or any commission created by a General Assembly

14

resolution, the appointing authority may appoint a member of the general public to serve in lieu

15

of a legislator, provided that the Majority Leader or the Minority Leader of the political party

16

which is entitled to the appointment, consents to the member of the general public.

     The purpose of said commission shall be to make a comprehensive study and analysis of

18

the need for technology funding for Rhode Island's public schools in order to better prepare

19

students for 21st century challenges and careers.

     Forthwith upon passage of this resolution, the members of the commission shall meet at

2

the call of the Speaker of the House and organize and shall select a chairperson from among the

3

legislators.

     Vacancies in said commission shall be filled in like manner as the original appointment.

5

     The membership of said commission shall receive no compensation for their services.

     All departments and agencies of the state shall furnish such advice and information,

7

documentary and otherwise, to said commission and its agents as is deemed necessary or

8

desirable by the commission to facilitate the purposes of this resolution.

     The Speaker of the House is hereby authorized and directed to provide suitable quarters

10

for said commission; and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the commission shall report its findings and recommendations to the

12

House of Representatives no later than April 7, 2016, and said commission shall expire on July 7,

13

2016.

who would report back to the House no later than April 7, 2016, and whose life would expire on

July 7, 2016.
