EXPRESSING OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES TO THE PACHECO FAMILY ON THE

PASSING OF FREDERICO M. PACHECO

     WHEREAS, Frederico "Fred" M. Pacheco passed away on December 23, 2014,

2

surrounded by his family and close friends. He was a highly respected businessman and

3

community leader for over forty years within the Bristol community; and

4

     WHEREAS, Mr. Pacheco was born in 1935, in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal, the son

5

of the late Maria Encarnacao Moniz and Manuel DaPonte Pacheco. He served his adopted nation

6

in the United States Army and later worked for the United States Air Force at Lages Air Force

7

Base in Terceira, an island in the Azores Archipelago; and

8

     WHEREAS, Mr. Pacheco had a very interesting and varied career. In the late 1960s he

9

became the first Portuguese person to teach the English language on Portuguese radio. He opened

10

an insurance agency during his early years in Bristol and later opened a very successful and

11

popular travel agency named "Bristol County Travel." He was well-known for his passionate love

12

for travel, and was highly respected for his knowledge of how the travel industry worked, and for

13

his deep reservoir of knowledge about numerous countries. Frederico visited 107 countries in his

14

lifetime and had traveled almost everywhere around the globe. He used his extensive knowledge

15

gained in these exploits to write a book entitled "Citizen of the World: My Memoirs"; and

16

     WHEREAS, Mr. Pacheco was a beloved figure within the Bristol community and a

17

passionate participant of the civic life in Bristol. He was, at various times in his life, the Chief

18

Marshal of the Bristol 4th of July Parade, President of the Bristol Rotary Club, Chairman of the

19

Bristol County Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Directors of the Ocean State

Development Authority, the Roger Williams University Advisory Board, the Bristol Schools

2

Advisory Board, Chairman of the Kaiser Complex Revitalization Committee, where he helped to

3

create Franklin Court, President of the Kaiser Neighbor's Committee, President of the Bristol

4

Local Development Corporation, President of Bacalhao, President of the World Wide Travel

5

Agents' Association, and was the founder and Vice President of the Association of Professional

6

Travel Agents. He also spearheaded a group that helped to create a monument honoring the late

7

Manuel L. daSilva, MD. Frederico was also a frequent participant in numerous radio and

8

television programs and was a panel speaker on a weekly radio show named "Voz do imigrante"

9

(Voice of the Immigrant); and

10

     WHEREAS, Mr. Pacheco was the recipient of numerous service awards in his lifetime

11

including awards received from the Portuguese American Federation, the Gold Medal of Merit

12

for Distinguished Service to the Portuguese community from the Portuguese government, the

13

Immigrant of the Year Award, the Citizen of the Year Award from the Bristol County Chamber,

14

the Family of the Year Award from the Portuguese Continental Union, the Paul Harris Fellow

15

Award, the Rotary International Award, the Man of the Year Award from the Bristol Sports Club,

16

as well as numerous official proclamations and awards from the American Heart Association, the

17

Leukemia Society, the Rhode Island House of Representatives, the Rhode Island State Senate, the

18

Bristol County Chamber of Commerce, the Town of Bristol, St. Elizabeth Church, King Philip

19

Little League, the Knights of Corte Reais, the Don Luiz Felipe Beneficial Organization, and the

20

Santo Christo Club. He also received Superior Service and Outstanding Service awards from the

21

United States Air Force; and

22

     WHEREAS, Mr. Pacheco leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Deodete Raimundo

23

Pacheco and his two children, Angela Pacheco Cabral, and Paulo Alexandre Pacheco, MD. He

24

also leaves behind four grandchildren, Sara Elisabeth Cabral, Sofia Elena Cabral, Isabel Sofia

25

Brennan-Pacheco, and Nicolas Alexandre Brennan-Pacheco, his sons-in-law, Arthur J. Cabral,

26

JD, and Paul Brennan, Esq., his sister Adriana Cleary, and several nieces and nephews including

27

Patricia Parker, Patrick Cleary, Kathleen Haynes, Philip Viveiros, Kathleen Viveiros MD,

28

Jeanette Morin, Richard Gullage, and Joseph Gullage. He was predeceased by his sister, Manuela

29

Gullage, and by his nephew Robert Gullage; now, therefore be it

30

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

31

Providence Plantations hereby expresses our deepest condolences to the Pacheco Family on the

32

passing of Frederico M. Pacheco, and be it further

33

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

     transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Deodete Raimundo Pacheco.
