PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY, 2013, TO BE "BRAIN TUMOR AWARENESS

MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Each year, doctors find a brain tumor in over 200 Rhode Islanders and a

spine tumor in even more patients.  In 2013, across the country, close to 70,000 new primary

1-3

brain tumor diagnoses will be made. Approximately 4,200 new malignant and non-malignant

1-4

brain tumor diagnoses are expected to occur in children; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Brain tumors may be malignant or benign, but can be life-threatening in

1-6

either case and diagnosis and treatment are often complicated by the fact that more than 120

1-7

different types of brain tumors exist; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, There is a significant need for greater awareness of brain and spine tumors

1-9

on the part of the public, including awareness of symptoms and warning signs, treatment options,

1-10

research needs, and public policy implications; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, In 2008, the Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor Foundation was founded

1-12

by Dr. Prakash Sampath in the City of Providence; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor Foundation strives to increase the

1-14

public’s knowledge about brain and spine injury; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor Foundation takes an active role in

1-16

providing educational opportunities for patients and clinicians in our state and acts as a liaison

1-17

between the Rhode Island community and the national associations for brain and spine tumor

1-18

research; and

1-19

     WHEREAS, In order to improve the quality of life for patients, the Foundation provides

1-20

social support initiatives for those individuals who are battling brain tumors, as well as for the

2-1

families, friends, and caregivers of those who are affected by a neuro-oncological disease; and

2-2

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor Foundation inspires people to

2-3

reveal the challenges they have faced in their own lives and to express how they overcome them.

Sharing these stories of survival helps to inspire others to triumph over their challenges and to

2-5

live fuller lives; now, therefore be it

2-6

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-7

hereby applauds the commitment that the Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor Foundation has

2-8

demonstrated and proudly proclaims the month of May, 2013, to be "Brain Tumor Awareness

2-9

Month"; and be it further

2-10

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-11

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Brain & Spine Tumor

2-12

Foundation.
