S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE PROVIDENCE CAREER AND

TECHNICAL ACADEMY'S GIRLS' AND BOYS' ROBOTICS TEAMS

     WHEREAS, As our young people prepare to compete in the global market, robotics

competitions and the skills inherent in the necessary preparation for these events have become

1-3

evermore popular and a tremendous opportunity for the development of engineering and

1-4

computer proficiency; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, This year, Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA) has produced

1-6

two outstanding teams who have successfully qualified for the robotics World tournament; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, An all-girls team from PCTA claimed the state title for the FIRST Tech

1-8

Challenge, the first-ever all-girls team to do so, which earned them a bid to the World

1-9

tournament, and a mere three weeks later, a second PCTA team won the regional qualifier for the

1-10

FIRST Robotics Competition, also placing them in contention for the World tournament; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, PCTA's all-girls team, the "Rhody Girls" claimed their title with

1-12

"PrettyBot," a breast cancer awareness-themed robot dedicated to the school's nurse, Barbara

1-13

Rios.  Learning valuable employment and life skills, the PCTA boys team, competed successfully

1-14

at Worcester Polytechnic Institute; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth and to

1-16

celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders.  Members of PCTA's two robotics teams are

1-17

truly remarkable young men and women.  They exemplify everything that young people can

1-18

achieve and they are truly deserving of our recognition and praise; now, therefore be it

1-19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-20

hereby congratulates and applauds the Providence Career and Technical Academy's girls' and

2-1

boys' robotics team for their accomplishments and their bids to compete at the World Robotics

2-2

tournament.  We furthermore wish both teams continued success in all their future endeavors; and

2-3

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-5

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Principal Ramon Torres, Providence Career

2-6

and Technical Academy.
