Introduced By: Senators Goodwin, P Fogarty, Lombardi, Jabour, and Lynch

     Date Introduced: May 02, 2013

Referred To: Recommended for Immediate Consideration

1-1

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Radio Hall of Fame was established in 2008 to celebrate

1-2

the medium's history in the Ocean State. Being selected as an Inductee into the organization is a

1-3

momentous tribute to those who have played a significant role in radio’s history and growth in

1-4

our state; and

1-5

WHEREAS, Vincent Albert Cianci, Jr., better known as “Buddy Cianci” to his adoring

1-6

fans and avid WADK-AM listeners, has been honored as one of the class of 2013’s inductees into

1-7

the Radio Hall of Fame; and

1-8

WHEREAS, As anyone who has ever heard Buddy speak at a function or talk on the

1-9

radio knows, he can discuss just about any topic, but is particularly equipped to discuss Rhode

1-10

Island politics with “in the know” insight and irreverent, tongue-in-cheek humor; and

1-11

WHEREAS, Born in Cranston, Buddy grew up in the Laurel Hill section of the city. His

1-12

grandparents, who had emigrated from Italy, had 13 children. From these humble beginnings,

1-13

Buddy Cianci built a life that soared to the highest pinnacles. With a determination and ability

1-14

that few people possess, he became Mayor of Providence and then subsequently rebuilt his career

1-15

in radio; and

1-16

WHEREAS, Buddy demonstrated an interest in radio from a young age. By the time he

1-17

was seven or eight, he was part of WJAR’s “kiddie review.” During the 80’s, he started full-time

1-18

for WHJJ-AM as an on-air personality, and most recently, he has been voted the state’s best radio

1-19

host for four years running; and

2-20

WHEREAS, With a radio career that has spanned more than forty years, Buddy Cianci

2-21

has had an enduring impact on the radio industry and his “on-air” accomplishments are worthy of

2-22

our recognition and emulation; now, therefore be it

2-23

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-24

hereby honors former Mayor Buddy Cianci on his induction into the Rhode Island Radio Hall of

2-25

Fame; and be it further

2-26
