HONORING THE STATE ALLIANCE OF RHODE ISLAND YMCAS

     

     

     Introduced By: Senators Lynch, Gallo, Paiva Weed, Metts, and Jabour

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s YMCAs are charitable, voluntary, community-based

associations dedicated to improving the quality of life for children, youth, adults, and families and

1-3

to strengthening communities through programs that build the spirit, mind, and body; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Known for their comprehensive health and fitness activities, YMCAs excel

1-5

in educating individuals on how to lead healthier lives. In addition, YMCAs promote the teaching

1-6

and role modeling of four key character values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s YMCAs are the largest provider of affordable child care in

1-8

the state, creating a healthy, safe, and nurturing environment for 4,400 children and youth every

1-9

day. Rhode Island’s YMCAs have nearly 140,000 members, and 64,000 of them are youth and

1-10

teens who are engaged in activities and services designed to build healthier spirits, minds, and

1-11

bodies.

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island’s YMCAs annually provide $7,000,000 of charitable financial

1-13

assistance and free and subsidized programs to individuals and groups to ensure that all can

1-14

participate in YMCA programs and services, regardless of their ability to pay; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, YMCAs bring together the young and old, men and women, and people of

1-16

all faiths and incomes. They seek to provide individuals with opportunities for personal

1-17

development and to foster their sense of responsibility to one another and to the local, national,

1-18

and world community; and

1-19

     WHEREAS, All six Rhode Island YMCA organizations have united to form a statewide

1-20

alliance to promote the growth of the Y movement in Rhode Island, enhance programming,

1-21

coordinate policy advocacy, and continue to strive for excellence in everything that they do; and

     WHEREAS, On April 27, 2013, the Rhode Island State Alliance of YMCAs will

2-2

celebrate its annual Healthy Kids Day, a free, interactive special event that employs fun,

2-3

engaging, and creative activities to encourage children and their families to adopt behaviors that

2-4

support healthy lifestyles; now, therefore be it

2-5

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-6

hereby recognizes the State Alliance of Rhode Island YMCAs as a leading partner in the state’s

2-7

quest to build stronger children, families, and communities. We furthermore congratulate the

2-8

State Alliance of Rhode Island YMCAs for its ceaseless efforts to fulfill the Y’s mission to put

2-9

Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for

2-10

all; and be it further

2-11

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-12

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Chairman of the State Alliance of Rhode

2-13

Island YMCAs.
