PROCLAIMING MARCH 19, 2013, AS "ANNUAL SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION DAY" IN

THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, The mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being

1-2

and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and

1-3

empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Social work is a profession for those who have a passion to empower

1-5

individuals, families, groups, and the communities they serve in order to create progressive

1-6

change in clinical and macro settings; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Social work education prepares students for work as qualified professionals.

1-8

Social work education offers these future professionals a foundation of core values including:

1-9

service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationship,

1-10

integrity, and competence; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, Social work students are taught aspects of cultural competence, diversity,

1-12

ethics, and policy in order to confront and eliminate social injustices; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, Employment of social workers is expected to increase at a rate that is much

1-14

faster than the average for all occupations. Concern about crime, juvenile delinquency, and

1-15

services for individuals and groups in crises is impelling the necessity for more social workers;

1-16

and

1-17

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island College School of Social work, Providence College

1-18

Department of Social Work, Salve Regina University Department of Social Work, and the

1-19

Community College of Rhode Island Social Work Education Program are helping to respond to

1-20

the pressing call for future social workers through comprehensive education and training

2-1

programs; now, therefore be it

2-2

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-3

hereby proclaims March 19, 2013, to be “Annual Social Work Education Day” in the State of

2-4

Rhode Island. We encourage educators, students, and citizens of this state to participate in this

2-5

day, acknowledging the wonderful education by Rhode Island College School of Social Work,

2-6

Providence College Department of Social Work, Salve Regina University Department of Social

2-7

Work, and the Community College of Rhode Island Social Work Education Program; and be it

2-8

further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-10

transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island Chapter of the National

2-11

Association of Social Workers, Rhode Island College School of Social Work, Providence College

2-12

Department of Social Work, Salve Regina University Department of Social Work, and the

2-13

Community College of Rhode Island Social Work Education Program.
