WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis currently afflicts more than 400,000 Americans and more |
|

than 2 million people worldwide; and |
|
1-3 |
WHEREAS, Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, and Multiple |
|
1-4 |
Sclerosis is 3 times as common in women as in men; and |
|
1-5 |
WHEREAS, Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable disease of the central nervous system |
|
1-6 |
that can cause blurred vision, loss of balance, poor coordination, slurred speech, tremors, |
|
1-7 |
numbness, extreme fatigue, problems with memory and concentration, paralysis, blindness, and |
|
1-8 |
more; and |
|
1-9 |
WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, through individual gifts, legacies |
|
1-10 |
and bequests, special events, and corporate contributions, is dedicated to finding a cure for this |
|
1-11 |
disease through research efforts and support for those that suffer from it; and |
|
1-12 |
WHEREAS, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society maintains an office in Warwick to |
|
1-13 |
offer vital support and programs to those living with multiple sclerosis and their family members; |
|
1-14 |
now, therefore be it |
|
1-15 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
|
1-16 |
hereby voices its commitment to the eradication of this disease and supports the treatment of its |
|
1-17 |
citizens that suffer from it; and be it further |
|
1-18 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate encourages private efforts to enhance research funding and |
|
1-19 |
education programs that address these diseases; and be it further |
|
2-20 |
RESOLVED, That this Senate joins with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in |
|
2-21 |
recognizing the week of March 11-17, 2013, as National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week to |
|
2-22 |
enhance the understanding of multiple sclerosis, and to encourage participation in voluntary |
|
2-23 |
activities to support the local programs and services offered by the National Multiple Sclerosis |
|
2-24 |
Society – Rhode Island Chapter, and the funding of research programs to find a cure for this |
|
2-25 |
disease; and be it further |
|
2-26 |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
|
2-27 |
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Warwick office of the National Multiple |
|
2-28 |
Sclerosis Society. |
