S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING THE MARCH OF DIMES ON THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS

FOUNDING

     WHEREAS, The March of Dimes is celebrating 75 years of tireless work and the

dedicated support of a legion of volunteers whose efforts have ensured that stronger, healthier

1-3

babies are born in Rhode Island; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, The March of Dimes was originally founded in 1938 by President Franklin

1-5

D. Roosevelt to fight polio, a growing public health concern at the time. The foundation funded

1-6

the development of two vaccines – still in use today – that virtually eliminated the crippling

1-7

disease; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, With its original mission accomplished, the March of Dimes sought out a

1-9

new mission. Today, the organization works to improve the health of women of childbearing age,

1-10

infants, and children by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, More than 4 million babies were born in the United States last year, and the

1-12

March of Dimes helped all of them through its research, education, vaccines, and breakthroughs;

1-13

and

1-14

     WHEREAS, The March of Dimes was also there for more than half a million babies born

1-15

too soon, over 1,300 of them right here in Rhode Island; and

1-16

     WHEREAS, The March of Dimes and its volunteers continue to advocate for state health

1-17

policies and programs that affect women of childbearing age, infants, children, and families; now,

1-18

therefore be it

1-19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-20

hereby salutes and congratulates the March of Dimes on the 75th Anniversary of its founding. We

2-1

furthermore recognize the dedicated volunteers and supporters for their continued efforts to

2-2

improve the health of moms and babies; and be it further

2-3

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-4

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the March of Dimes Rhode Island Chapter.
