EXPRESSING SINCERE CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF THE HONORABLE

NANCY E. SPRENGELMEYER

     WHEREAS, It is with utmost sadness that this Senate has learned of the untimely passing

1-2

of The Honorable Nancy E. Sprengelmeyer, loving wife, lifelong educator, and recently the Vice-

1-3

Chairperson of the Coventry School Committee, representing District 4; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Beginning on her path to a life-long career in education, Mrs.

1-5

Sprengelmeyer attended Salve Regina College.  She continued her education at Rhode Island

1-6

College and the University of Rhode Island, with graduate studies in Guidance, Education,

1-7

Reading, and English, and years later, with graduate studies in Administration at Providence

1-8

College.  Mrs. Sprengelmeyer also attended Career Development Facilitator Training and the

1-9

Bryant University Leadership Academy; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, Upon graduation from college, Mrs. Sprengelmeyer was employed at

1-11

Middletown High School and shortly thereafter at Coventry High School, where she taught

1-12

English, Reading, and Study Skills; and

1-13

     WHEREAS, In 1999, Mrs. Sprengelmeyer became Assistant to the Director and

1-14

Educational Consultant at the West Bay Career and Technical Center, and in 2002, became

1-15

Interim Director of the Regional Career Center at Coventry; and

1-16

     WHEREAS, In 2003, Mrs. Sprengelmeyer was named Interim Cooperative Education

1-17

Coordinator in Coventry and in 2005, until her retirement in 2008, she served as the High School

1-18

Diploma Teacher for the Exeter Job Corps Academy; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to her service as a dedicated teacher, director, child advocate,

2-20

and role model to not only her former students, but to all who knew her, Mrs. Sprengelmeyer

2-21

successfully ran for and was elected to a seat on the Coventry School Committee in November of

2-22

2002.  She served as Chairperson of the committee from 2002 until 2006, and was currently

2-23

serving as the committee’s Vice-Chairperson; and

2-24

     WHEREAS, In 2005, Mrs. Sprengelmeyer was recognized by the Rhode Island

2-25

Association of School Committees for her commitment to ongoing professional development.  In

2-26

addition, she was active in the community with a plethora of clubs, committees, and

2-27

organizations, including the Coventry Juvenile Hearing Board, the Pawtuxet Valley Rotary, and

2-28

the Coventry Friendship Link; and

2-29

     WHEREAS, The Honorable Nancy Sprengelmeyer was an amazing woman who served

2-30

as a pace-setter for all our educational leaders and the accomplishments and strides she made in

2-31

the educational experience of the children of Coventry will be felt for generations.  She will be

2-32

greatly missed; now, therefore be it

2-33

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-34

hereby extends our deepest condolences on the passing of Nancy E. Sprengelmeyer.  She will

2-35

forever be remembered as a dedicated champion of education; and be it further

2-36

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-37

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Joseph R. Sprengelmeyer.
