1-1

WHEREAS, In a society that grows increasingly fragmented and fractious and all too

1-2

often tempts its youth to selfish and unwise decisions, it is a very special young man who chooses

1-3

to dedicate himself to the service of others by putting into practice the noble ideals of the Scout

1-4

Oath and Scout Law. Nicolas A. Given is just such a first-rate youth, and his accomplishments

1-5

are truly deserving of our recognition; and

1-6

WHEREAS, Nicolas is a member of Troop 1 Kingston, Rhode Island. With perseverance

1-7

and determination, he has attained the highest rank in scouting, the Eagle, by meeting all the

1-8

extensive requirements; and

1-9

WHEREAS, During his years in scouting, Nicolas has demonstrated wide-ranging

1-10

abilities that make him a worthy leader. In addition to earning an array of merit badges, Nicholas

1-11

participated in a strenuous 52-mile hike across the Appalachian Trail and a high adventure camp

1-12

at the Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys; and

1-13

WHEREAS, As the highlight of his scouting years, he completed the final step toward

1-14

obtaining the rank of Eagle by planning and carrying out an extensive Eagle service project.

1-15

Nicholas reclaimed an overgrown parking area at St. Augustine’s Church in Kingston, Rhode

1-16

Island. Nicholas and fellow scouts devoted countless hours and amazing amount of energy using

1-17

hand tools to clear the overgrown brush for his project; and

1-18

WHEREAS, Attaining the rank of Eagle requires considerable perseverance and is

1-19

considered to be the pinnacle of achievement with the Boy Scouts of America. It is an exceptional

1-20

distinction achieved by fewer than five percent of all the young men who enter scouting; and

2-1

WHEREAS, Nicholas is the son of James and Paula Given, and is currently in his

2-2

Sophomore year at South Kingstown High School, where he is a member of the wrestling team;

2-3

and

2-4

WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth, and to

celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Nicholas A. Given is a remarkable young

2-6

man who exemplifies everything an Eagle Scout should be, and all that we hope our children will

2-7

grow to be; now, therefore be it

2-8

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-9

hereby honors Nicholas A. Given for his service to the community and for setting a high standard
