EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES ON THE PASSING OF JAMES P. BOTELHO

     WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness and regret that this House of Representatives has

1-2

learned of the passing of James "Jim" P. Botelho, a man who touched the lives of many

1-3

throughout his life and career; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, James was born in Newport, RI, and was a lifelong resident of Aquidneck

1-5

Island. He was the son of the late Louis and Irene (Piver) Botelho, and brother to Joseph Botelho,

1-6

the late Everett, Louis, Edward, Frank, and Anthony Botelho, and the late Virginia Mederios, the

1-7

late Ethel Matthews, the late Irene Marcucci-Smith, and the late Beatrice Daponte; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, James leaves behind his lifelong friend and wife, Patricia Ann (Sullivan)

1-9

Botelho, to whom he was married for 57 gracious years; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, In addition to his wife, Patricia, James also leaves behind his three children,

1-11

James D. Botelho, Patricia Lynn Botelho, and Judith Ann Costa and her husband, Frank, and his

1-12

grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn Ferreira, Justin Wells, Adam Wasilewski, Alex Wasilewski, and

1-13

Tyler Allot, and great grandchildren, Kyle Oliviera, Jacob Oliviera, Mia Oliviera, and Leah

1-14

Ferreira; and

1-15

     WHEREAS, A driven individual even at a young age, James started working at the age of

1-16

nine as a shoe shine boy on the long wharf of Newport. He was later employed at the Columbus

1-17

Bakery and then at the Newport Gas Company, where he was a meter reader. In 1966, James

1-18

opened the Colonial Ice Cream Parlor, which he ran along with his wife and children until 1985;

1-19

and

1-20

     WHEREAS, James never failed to serve and strengthen his community. He served in the

1-21

United States Navy and was stationed in Newport for three years. He also served his church, Saint

2-1

Barnabas, as a communicant and active participant. James was a proud member of the Newport

2-2

Knights of Columbus, where he ran the renowned Portuguese Night at the K of C Hall in

2-3

Newport, was eager to volunteer during the holidays, and could even be found behind the grill at

2-4

the Maher Center cookouts. James had the distinct honor of being named Grand Knight in 1990;

2-5

and

2-6

     WHEREAS, James was always happy to lend a hand to his neighbors and friends, trusted

2-7

as a person to talk to or to spend time with, and also as a reliable plumber who stood ready

2-8

whenever there was a leaky faucet or sink to be fixed; and

2-9

     WHEREAS, Welcoming and warm to every person he met, James always opened his

2-10

doors to friends and family and was more than eager to host holiday parties and special events;

2-11

and

2-12

     WHEREAS, A remarkable and gracious man whose giving heart and omnipresent spirit

2-13

greatly enriched the lives of his family, friends, and anyone that had the genuine honor of

2-14

knowing him, James' life was filled with good deeds and good times. He represented all that is

2-15

best in Newport and in our state, and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered for his grace,

2-16

humor, and faith; now, therefore be it

2-17

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-18

Providence Plantations hereby offers its sincere condolences to the family and many friends of

2-19

James (Jim) P. Botelho; and be it further

2-20

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-21

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Patricia Ann (Sullivan) Botelho.
