RELATING TO ELECTIONS - TERMS OF OFFICE

     

     

     Introduced By: Representatives Palangio, Winfield, O'Brien, San Bento, and DeSimone

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Chapter 17-1 of the General Laws entitled "General Provisions" is hereby

amended by adding thereto the following section:

     17-1-11. Local terms of office. -- Commencing on January 1, 2017, notwithstanding any

charter, ordinance, public or general law provision to the contrary, all terms of office for all city

1-5

and town elected officials shall be four (4) years, unless the governing body of a municipality

1-6

votes not to follow the mandatory four (4) year term for its local elected officials.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

     This act would create a uniform term of office for all local elected officials of four (4)

years, unless a city or town or governing body votes not to follow the mandatory four (4) year
