H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

VOICING SUPPORT FOR HEATHER ABBOTT

     WHEREAS, April 15th is a day that annually commemorates the grit, determination, and

tenacity of the American people as they celebrate the legacy of the initial actions that led to our

1-3

nation's independence; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, The tragic events of the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15, 2013, have

1-5

tested one Rhode Islander's grit, determination, and tenacity in ways that simply stun the rest of

1-6

the Ocean State; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Newport's Heather Abbott found herself thrust into the public limelight as a

1-8

result of life-altering injuries she sustained in the wake of the heinous Boston Marathon

1-9

bombings. Heather now faces the challenges of ongoing therapy, numerous medical interventions,

1-10

and creating a new reality for herself; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, Heather is much more than simply a victim of this cowardly act of

1-12

terrorism, however. A bright, active young woman who is professionally respected for her work

1-13

at Raytheon and who has demonstrated her commitment to helping those in need, Heather

1-14

represents the very best of Rhode Island. Heather's full measure as a person -- her warmth,

1-15

vitality, and indomitable character -- is what transfixes the admiration of others and prompts total

1-16

strangers to come out to encourage her; now, therefore be it

1-17

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

1-18

Providence Plantations voices its wholehearted support for Heather as she begins her journey of

1-19

recovery. We pray that Heather and her loved ones make their way through these trying

1-20

circumstances with courage and grace; and be it further

2-21

     RESOLVED, That we honor Heather Abbott as an exemplary citizen, professional, and

2-22

human being, and commend her bravery and fortitude in the face of great personal tragedy. We

2-23

express our very best wishes for her continued progress and improvement in the days and months

2-24

ahead; and be it further

2-25

      RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-26

transmit a duly certified of this resolution to Ms. Heather Abbott.
