CONGRATULATING SHEILA DIXON ON HER SELECTION TO THE 2013 ALL-IVY

BASKETBALL TEAM

     WHEREAS, It is fitting that this House recognizes those young people who, through

1-2

their talents and unflagging commitment to excellence, have exalted themselves in both academia

1-3

and athletics; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Sheila Dixon attended Schenectady High School and is now a Senior,

1-5

majoring in Political Science, at Brown University.  Being the youngest of fifteen biological and

1-6

adopted children in her blended family allowed her to generate a tenacity and will to succeed that

1-7

have already yielded a panoply of accomplishments for Ms. Dixon; and

1-8

     WHEREAS, During her high school years, Sheila focused on her goals.  She not only

1-9

achieved admirable grades, but also became a stand-out basketball player with her high school's

1-10

team, the Patriots.  During the season, she averaged 13.7 points-per-game and led the school's

1-11

team to its first Big 10 regular season title, earning her the distinction of being named the Big 10

1-12

League MVP.  She was also named to the New York State Class AA fourth team, and was the

1-13

Albany Times Union Girls' Basketball Athlete of the Year; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, Sheila's drive and amazing athletic skills helped fulfill her dreams of

1-15

attending an Ivy League school.  In the fall of 2009, she not only began classes, but also saw

1-16

major action on the court for Brown University, averaging 12.4 minutes-per-game and netting a

1-17

career-high 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, During her Sophomore and Junior years at Brown, Sheila was named as a

1-19

Second Team All-Ivy selection in back-to-back years.  In addition, during the 2010-2011 season,

2-1

she was named the Most Valuable Player, was Brown's leading scorer and rebounder with 11

2-2

points and 6.3 rebounds per game, and earned All-Tournament Team honors at the Hawk Holiday

2-3

Classic and the Brown BEAR Basketball Classic; and

2-4

     WHEREAS, During the 2011-2012 basketball season, Sheila was the Cox Sports

2-5

Division I Rhode Island Women's Player of the Year.  She started in all 28 games for the Bears,

2-6

was named the MVP of the Brown Classic, and was the team's leading scorer and rebounder

2-7

during the regular season, earning her the Ivy League Player of the Week honors; and

2-8

     WHEREAS, Sheila is currently a senior at Brown University and one of our very

2-9

dedicated House Pages.  She is co-captain of the Bears this year and has once again been honored

2-10

as an All-Ivy selection, earning an Honorable Mention.  She became the 16th Brown women's

2-11

basketball player to reach the 1,000 point milestone, and her 1,070 career points makes her the

2-12

13th highest scorer in the program's history; and

2-13

       WHEREAS, There are always young people who rise above the rest, who dare to

2-14

dream, and are willing to endeavor to make those dreams become reality.  Over the course of her

2-15

short lifetime, Sheila Dixon has already distinguished herself with a profundity of awards and

2-16

accomplishments.  She is an exceptional young woman and she is truly deserving of our

2-17

recognition and praise; now, therefore be it

2-18

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-19

Providence Plantations hereby congratulates Sheila Dixon on her third All-Ivy selection.  We

2-20

furthermore wish her much success in all her future endeavors; and be it further 

2-21

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to

2-22

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Sheila Dixon.
