RELATING TO ELECTIONS - RHODE ISLAND CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS AND

EXPENDITURES REPORTING

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

     SECTION 1. Section 17-25-12 of the General Laws in Chapter 17-25 entitled "Rhode

Island Campaign Contributions and Expenditures Reporting" is hereby amended to read as

follows:

     17-25-12. Prohibited contributions. -- No contributions shall be made, and no

expenditure shall be made or incurred, whether anonymously, in a fictitious name, or by one

person or group in the name of another, to support or defeat a candidate in a primary, general, or

1-7

special election. No treasurer or candidate shall solicit or knowingly accept any contribution

1-8

contrary to the provisions of this section.

     In addition, no member of the general assembly shall accept a campaign contribution

1-10

during the period from January 1, through the day of passage of the state budget by both houses

1-11

of the general assembly.

     SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

     This act would forbid the acceptance of campaign contributions from January 1, to the
