H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N

THANKING CAPTAIN JOSEPH F. CABRAL FOR HIS SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE AND

TOWN OF BRISTOL

     WHEREAS, Public service is a noble calling that involves providing a broad range of

services that are an integral part of our citizens’ daily lives.  For almost forty years, the vast

1-3

responsibility for oversight for the Town of Bristol’s harbor and waterways has been in the very

1-4

capable hands of Captain Joseph Cabral; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, After emigrating from Portugal as a young child, Joe Cabral made the Town

1-6

of Bristol his home.  Together with his wife, Georgette, the couple raised their two children, John

1-7

Cabral and Maryann Calouro, and now dote on their four beautiful grandchildren, Jacob,

1-8

Madison, Benjamin, and Thomas; and 

1-9

     WHEREAS, Joe served our country honorably in the United States Navy during the

1-10

Vietnam War before establishing the Harbor Patrol for the Town of Bristol; and   

1-11

     WHEREAS, Over the course of his dedicated career as Harbormaster, Captain Cabral has

1-12

overseen the evolution of the department as the importance of maintaining safety and  protecting

1-13

the resources of the waterfront have become more prevalent; and 

1-14

     WHEREAS, Captain Cabral has provided services that are vital to the health, safety,

1-15

well-being, and comfort of not only Bristol’s citizenry, but also of the many tourists who travel to

1-16

the town because of its magnificent water vistas and beautiful harbor.  In 2005, he was awarded a

1-17

commendation from the President of the United States for his dedication and diligence; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, Also involved with myriad community projects and groups, Joe began and

1-19

continues to run the Bristol Boat Show each year.  To date, more than $81,000 has been

1-20

generously raised and donated to area charitable organizations.  In addition, as a member of the

2-1

Christmas Festival Committee, he was able to secure a boat that was auctioned off with the

2-2

proceeds donated to charity; and 

2-3

     WHEREAS, An all around good guy, Captain Cabral retired on December 1st of 2012.

He has been the man in charge of the harbor operations for almost four decades and his shoes will

2-5

be a tough pair to fill as the search for a new harbormaster begins; now, therefore be it

2-6

     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and

2-7

Providence Plantations hereby thanks and honors Captain Joseph F. Cabral, Harbormaster for the

2-8

Town of Bristol, for his many years of service to the people of our state.  We furthermore wish

2-9

him good health, contentment, and every happiness as he sets sail towards new adventures; and

2-10

be it further

2-11

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-12

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Captain Joseph F. Cabral.
