1-1

WHEREAS, Greg Gerritt has devoted his life to the protection of the environment and

1-2

the preservation of our natural resources. He grew up in New York City, but developed an early

1-3

affinity for and appreciation of the woods and nature. He regularly visited the Bronx Zoo and the

American Museum of Natural History as a child and became interested in science and using

science to preserve the environment; and

immersed in the greening of America ever since. His academic background is in evolutionary

1-8

biology and anthropology, but he decided that a life of living in and working with nature was

1-9

preferable to an academic career. He has built an award-winning solar house and an amazing

1-10

woodlot, works daily with soil and compost to improve garden fertility, and has run a successful

1-11

social carpentry business; and

1-12

WHEREAS, Greg moved with his wife to Providence to be closer to aging parents. He

1-13

currently works part-time for the Environmental Council of Rhode Island. He organizes events,

1-14

talks in schools, and coordinates efforts to build community support for the preservation of our

1-15

environment and precious natural resources. For his hard work and commitment to these noble

1-16

ideals in 2011, he will receive an Environmental Merit Award from the New England Office of

1-17

the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) at Faneuil Hall in Boston on April 25,

1-18

2012; now, therefore be it

2-19

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-20

hereby congratulates Mr. Greg Gerritt for receiving an Environmental Award from the EPA. We

2-21

thank him for his lifetime commitment to the protection and preservation of the environment and

2-22

our natural resources; and be it further

2-23

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-24

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Greg Gerritt.
