HONORING THOMAS E. GREENE ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AS

PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE NATHANAEL GREENE

HOMESTEAD ASSOCIATION

     WHEREAS, In serving as President of the Board of Trustees of the Nathanael Greene

Homestead Association, Inc., a nonprofit organization that oversees General Greene’s

1-3

Homestead, Thomas E. Greene has devoted his considerable talents and energy to preserving and

1-4

perpetuating the achievements and homestead of one of Rhode Island’s greatest Revolutionary

1-5

War heroes, General Nathanael Greene; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, General Nathanael Greene was born in Warwick in 1742. With no formal

1-7

education, he was trained by his father to be an ironmaster. As war between the colonies and

1-8

Britain escalated, Greene was appointed General of the Army of Observation by the Rhode Island

1-9

General Assembly. Congress later appointed Greene as Brigadier General of the Continental

1-10

Army and eventually as Major General; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, As General Washington’s second-in-command and a noted war strategist,

1-12

General Greene was involved in many of the war’s major battles. After returning from the war,

1-13

General Greene built Spell Hall, what has historically become known as the “Homestead”; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, With an astounding background of historical insights and knowledge,

1-15

Thomas Greene was immensely well-suited to assume the challenges of renovating and

1-16

highlighting the “Homestead” and the accomplishments of its esteemed inhabitants. He is the

1-17

North Providence Town Historian, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, a member

1-18

of the John Russell Bartlett Society, a philatelist and volunteer Curator of Brown University’s

1-19

stamp collection; and

     WHEREAS, In addition to his work at the Homestead and his many affiliations, Mr.

2-21

Greene has devoted a generous portion of his life to educating today’s populace on myriad

2-22

additional fronts. He is a music teacher for the City of Warwick’s public schools and an Adjunct

2-23

Professor teaching Jazz History and Introduction to Music at the Community College of Rhode

2-24

Island. He has also served as the Musical Director of the La Salle Celtic Arts Club; and 

2-25

     WHEREAS, After twenty-six years of service, Mr. Thomas Greene is retiring as

2-26

President of the Board of Trustees, and in doing so, he leaves a proud legacy of consistently

2-27

demonstrating an abiding passion for his stewardship not only over General Nathanael Greene’s

2-28

homestead and memory, but also for our state’s rich and significant history; now, therefore be it

2-29

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-30

hereby joins his wife, Barbara, and his many friends and admirers in recognizing and thanking

2-31

Thomas E. Greene on the occasion of his retirement after twenty-six years of steadfast and

2-32

dedicated service as President of the Board of Trustees of the General Nathanael Greene

2-33

Homestead Association. We wish him good health, fulfillment, and continued success in all his

2-34

future endeavors; and be it further

2-35

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-36

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Thomas E. Greene.
