CONGRATULATING HERB MEISTER ON RECEIVING A 2012 NEWPORT DAILY NEWS

"COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD"

     WHEREAS, The Newport Daily News Community Service Award annually honors

1-2

individuals who have contributed greatly to the community with years of dedicated, unselfish

1-3

service. One of the 2012 recipients is Herb Meister; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, Herb Meister was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and moved to Rhode

1-5

Island to attend Bryant College after serving a short stint in the United States Air Force. He

1-6

settled in Providence and became the co-owner of a jewelry business. Over the years, he lived in

1-7

Providence, Pawtucket, and Warwick. Shortly after retiring from the jewelry business, he and his

1-8

wife, Melba, who passed away three years ago, bought a condominium on Goat Island, where he

1-9

lives today; and

1-10

     WHEREAS, A trip to Israel in 1994 sparked in Herb a desire to help others. Upon

1-11

returning home, Herb contacted the Jewish Federation of Rhode Island, asking how he could

1-12

help. Since then, he has visited the sick and elderly in nursing homes, helped launch a statewide

1-13

Potato Latke Day, helped provide funding to the needy through the Hebrew Free Loan

1-14

Association, and personally sewed, sanded, and glued together 200 wooden menorahs and

1-15

distributed them to nursing homes and assisted living centers; and

1-16

     WHEREAS, Herb still regularly visits seniors in nursing homes and the Veterans Home

1-17

in Bristol. According to Ethan Adler, Assistant Director of Jewish Eldercare of Rhode Island,

1-18

who wrote a letter nominating Herb Meister for the Community Service Award, Herb exemplifies

1-19

the ancient Jewish dictum “you shall not separate yourself from the community” and acts as a

1-20

“beacon of light, illuminating the path of volunteerism for others to follow”; now, therefore be it

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-2

hereby congratulates Herb Meister on receiving a 2012 Newport Daily News Community Service

2-3

Award. We thank him for making Newport County a better place to work and live; and be it

2-4

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-6

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Herb Meister.
