S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING THE WINNERS OF THE SEVENTH ANNUAL

HOBEY BAKER HIGH SCHOOL CHARACTER AWARD

     WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Interscholastic Hockey Coaches Association, in

conjunction with the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Foundation, has awarded one high school

1-3

senior from each of the state’s forty-three participating high schools with the annual Hobey Baker

1-4

High School Character Award; and

1-5

     WHEREAS, Hobey Baker was the ultimate athlete. He was the captain of both the

1-6

Hockey and Football teams at Princeton University in 1910. He was inducted into the College,

1-7

the Canadian, and the American Halls of Fame. He served his country with valor and distinction

1-8

during World War I as a fighter pilot, but shortly before returning home at the war's end, he was

1-9

killed in a plane crash in France. He was the embodiment of true sportsmanship and is a symbol

1-10

of the perfect hero; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, This prestigious award, given in his honor, acknowledges the student-

1-12

athletes who have demonstrated exemplary spirit, character, and sportsmanship on their teams, at

1-13

their schools, and in their communities; and 

1-14

     WHEREAS, Each of this year’s forty-three award winners are remarkable young men

1-15

and women who have demonstrated that they are eminently worthy of this prestigious

1-16

achievement and our recognition; now, therefore be it

1-17

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-18

hereby recognizes the winners of the 2011-2012 Hobey Baker High School Character Award. We

1-19

congratulate them for exhibiting superior character and exemplary sportsmanship during the past

1-20

hockey season, and we encourage all of this year’s winners to continue to be the kind of

2-1

determined and dedicated young men and women that America truly needs; and be it further

2-2

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution Joseph Judge, Rhode Island State Director, Hobey

2-4

Baker Character Foundation.
