WHEREAS, Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1989 by |
|

Anthony K. Shriver. It was the country’s first national, unified, social and recreational program |
|

for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD); and |
|
1-4 |
WHEREAS, The mission of Best Buddies is to “establish a global volunteer movement |
|
1-5 |
that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership |
|
1-6 |
development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities”; and |
|
1-7 |
WHEREAS, Currently, Best Buddies has programs in all 50 states, and in 50 countries |
|
1-8 |
around the world located on six continents; and |
|
1-9 |
WHEREAS, Eighty-nine percent of all revenue collected goes directly to Best Buddies |
|
1-10 |
programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, while only 11 percent is |
|
1-11 |
spent on administration and fundraising; and |
|
1-12 |
WHEREAS, Presently, Best Buddies Rhode Island, our local chapter, supports friendship |
|
1-13 |
programs in 15 public and private schools across the state; and |
|
1-14 |
WHEREAS, Continued funding for Best Buddies Rhode Island will allow the |
|
1-15 |
organization to continue to grow and supply programs that make a real difference for all who |
|
1-16 |
participate; now, therefore be it |
|
1-17 |
RESOLVED, That there is hereby appropriated, out of any money in the treasury not |
|
1-18 |
otherwise appropriated for the fiscal year 2012-2013, the sum of seventy-five thousand dollars |
|
1-19 |
($75,000) for Best Buddies Rhode Island; and the state controller is hereby authorized and |
|
1-20 |
directed to draw his orders upon the general treasurer for the payment of said sum, or so much |
|
1-21 |
thereof as may be from time required, upon receipt by him of properly authenticated vouchers. |
