PROCLAIMING JANUARY 22-28, 2012 AS "SCHOOL CHOICE WEEK" IN THE STATE OF

RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, All children in Rhode Island should have the right to the highest quality

schools possible; and

1-3

     WHEREAS, Citizens across Rhode Island agree that improving the quality of education

1-4

and expanding access to highly effective schools should be an issue of importance to our state’s

1-5

leaders; and

1-6

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island recognizes the critical role that an effective and accountable

1-7

system of education plays in preparing all children in this state to be successful in a global

1-8

economy; and

1-9

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island has a multitude of high quality public schools, public charter

1-10

schools, and nonpublic schools; and

1-11

     WHEREAS, Rhode Island has many high quality teaching professionals in traditional

1-12

schools, public charter schools, and private schools across the state who are committed to

1-13

educating children; and

1-14

     WHEREAS, The vital cause of education reform is one that transcends ideology and

1-15

political party affiliation; and

1-16

     WHEREAS, Research in Rhode Island and across our nation demonstrates conclusively

1-17

that providing children with multiple schooling options improves academic performance; now,

1-18

therefore be it

1-19

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

1-20

hereby proclaims January 22-28, 2012, as “School Choice Week” in the State of Rhode Island;

and be it further

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-3

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Deborah A. Gist, Rhode Island Commissioner

2-4

of Elementary and Secondary Education.
