S E N A T E R E S O L U T I O N

RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING DERRICK JAMES SOARES UPON ACHIEVING

SCOUTING'S MOST DISTINGUISHED HONOR, THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

     WHEREAS, In a society that grows increasingly fragmented and too often tempts its

youth to selfish and unwise decisions, it is a special young man who chooses to dedicate himself

1-3

to the service of others by practicing the noble ideals of the Scout Oath and Scout Law; and

1-4

     WHEREAS, In spite of peer pressure and other influences, there are those teenagers who

1-5

rise above the rest. Derrick James Soares is just such a first-rate youth, and his accomplishments

1-6

are truly deserving of our recognition; and

1-7

     WHEREAS, Derrick started his scouting career in September, 1999, as a Tiger Scout in

1-8

Pack 4, Frenchtown, Rhode Island, where he ultimately earned Cub Scout’s highest award, the

1-9

Arrow of Light. In 2004, he became a member of Troop 1, East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Using

1-10

his skills and abilities for the common good, he has earned the required Merit Badges to attain the

1-11

rank of Eagle Scout; and

1-12

     WHEREAS, Derrick is particularly enthusiastic about outdoor activities such as Camp

1-13

Yawgoog and Resolute, hiking, skiing, canoeing, white water rafting, and camping. He has

1-14

participated in several High Adventure experiences, including Allagash in Maine, Philmont in

1-15

New Mexico, and Sea Base in the Florida Keys. Derrick has climbed nineteen of the forty-eight

1-16

4000-foot mountains as a result of his various treks through New Hampshire. He has also earned

1-17

the 50-miler scouting award; and

1-18

     WHEREAS, Derrick, a leader and member of Troop 1, East Greenwich, Rhode Island,

1-19

has excelled in many leadership positions, including serving as Den Chief for his younger

1-20

brother’s Cub Scout Pack and Den; and

     WHEREAS, Derrick’s Eagle Project was to take on the challenge of building twelve

2-2

Mutt-Mitt containers for the Town of East Greenwich, Department of Parks and Recreation.

These containers have been placed throughout the local recreation areas of East Greenwich to

2-4

allow residents to keep the parks clean as they recreate with their animals. He devoted countless

2-5

hours and an amazing amount of energy carrying out his project for the benefit of the entire town;

2-6

and

2-7

     WHEREAS, Derrick enjoys playing the acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, and the

2-8

drums. Currently a senior at Saint Andrew’s School in Barrington, he is looking forward to

2-9

graduation so he can continue his studies in psychology and journalism; and

2-10

     WHEREAS, It is essential and fitting to recognize the triumphs of our youth and to

2-11

celebrate the accomplishments of our future leaders. Derrick exemplifies everything an Eagle

2-12

Scout should be and all that we hope our children will grow to be; now, therefore be it

2-13

     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations

2-14

hereby honors Derrick James Soares for all he has done to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. We also

2-15

extend our deepest appreciation to Derrick for his untiring service to the community and for

2-16

setting a high standard of commitment and dedication by which the youth of this great state may

2-17

follow; and be it further

2-18

     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to

2-19

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Eagle Scout Derrick James Soares.
