CONGRATULATING CAPTAIN BRUCE B. FISHER ON BEING NAMED "MARITIME MAN OF THE YEAR"

WHEREAS, The Propeller Club of the United States is an organization that dedicates itself to the support of the Merchant Marine, U.S. flag vessels and the growth and improvement of rivers, lakes and coastal deep-water ports throughout the United States; and

WHEREAS, On National Maritime Day, May 21, 2001, the Propeller Club, Port of Narragansett Bay is honoring an outstanding member of the maritime community, Captain Bruce B. Fisher as "Maritime Man of the Year"; and

WHEREAS, Captain Bruce Fisher is a 28 year veteran ship pilot and waterfront activist throughout Southern New England. He is credited with playing a major role in defending against the de-designation of the Fall River State Pier as a port area, retaining and expanding the business opportunities of the Port of Providence, and, as president of the Propeller Club for the past two years, has been actively involved with efforts to deepen the Providence River by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; and

WHEREAS, A well-respected ship pilot dedicated to the safe transit of vessels throughout area ports, Captain Fisher was instrumental in negotiations to install an electronic wind, tide and weather information system for ship traffic use in Mount Hope Bay and the Taunton River; and

WHEREAS, Captain Fisher is a graduate of the Massachusetts Maritime Association and is an active member of the American Pilot's Association, the North Atlantic Ports Association and an honorary member of the Boston Maritime Society; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby honors Captain Bruce B. Fisher for his outstanding commitment to safe maritime transit along the Southern New England Shoreline. We congratulate Captain Fisher on being named "Maritime Man of the Year" and wish him, his wife Claire, daughter Victoria, and sons Bruce and Brian the very best health and future happiness; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Captain Bruce B. Fisher.
